If a language is missing from training data, its speakers are missing from the product. A $100,000 commitment from the Ingrid Hope Foundation and partners in the AI for Development Funders Collaborative aims to change that.
What the funding supports
The pledge backs datasets, evaluation, and open resources so models can understand and generate more African languages. That work includes community-led collection, quality standards, and public goods that others can reuse.
Why it matters for health and opportunity
Local-language AI can help a farmer identify crop disease, a parent get vaccine information, or a student practice reading. Without inclusive language data, those tools stay out of reach.
Inclusive models are a prerequisite for equitable AI — not a later upgrade.
