Burkina Faso
We support the government of Burkina Faso in realizing its health and development goals, particularly in the areas of health and nutrition, family planning, agricultural productivity, and gender equality.
At a glance
- Burkina Faso’s recent investments in human capital and inclusive development have led to reductions in child and maternal mortality, broader vaccine coverage, better child nutrition, and other indicators of progress in improving the lives of its people.
- In 2019, we signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Burkina Faso to collaborate on an integrated approach to the country’s ambitious National Plan for Economic and Social Development.
- We also work to align our efforts with multilateral organizations such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; the Global Financing Facility; the World Bank; and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Overview
We support the government of Burkina Faso and other partners to improve health outcomes and empower people in the poorest communities, especially women and girls. Our efforts aim to help improve agricultural production, expand access to quality family planning services, combat infectious diseases, improve nutrition, spur vaccine development, improve sanitation, and expand maternal and newborn health programs.
Despite limited natural resources and the challenges of a changing climate, Burkina Faso has achieved both economic growth and improved health outcomes in recent years as a result of government investment in human capital and inclusive development. The progress has included reductions in child and maternal mortality, improved vaccine coverage, and better child nutrition.
Agriculture plays a key role in food security, economic growth, and poverty reduction in Burkina Faso, as it does throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Through our partners, we help empower smallholder farmers with information and tools to help them increase their productivity.
