Overview

France is a highly engaged multilateral partner in health, development, and gender equality globally—as a donor and as a key member of global alliances and funding mechanisms, including Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and the World Health Organization. Its areas of strategic focus in global health—including strengthening health systems, fighting infectious diseases, and improving maternal, newborn, and child health—closely align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

France also wields considerable influence over the global health and development priorities of the Group of 7 and Group of 20 nations and the European Union. It is a key partner, along with the foundation, in the Ouagadougou Partnership, which works to expand access to family planning services in French-speaking West Africa.

We work together with France to amplify the impact of development assistance and scientific expertise in low- and middle-income countries by supporting research and the translation of scientific discoveries into sustainable solutions. We also support nongovernmental organizations based in France that apply French expertise to global health challenges and rally support among policymakers and the public.

Partners in France include MedinCell, which is developing a long-acting injectable contraceptive intended primarily for women in developing countries; Agence Française de Développement, whose work includes efforts to increase vaccination coverage and strengthen health systems in West Africa; and CEA, a research organization involved in assessing immune responses to vaccines and antibodies.
