From our San Francisco headquarters, we work with the German government, Germany’s thriving life sciences sector, civil society, and other institutions across Europe that are addressing urgent global health and development needs.
At a glance

Overview
Germany has a deep commitment to reducing global inequity and is the world’s second-largest donor to international health and development programs, after the United States. We invest in efforts by nongovernmental organizations, companies, universities, and research institutions across Germany to improve the lives of people in the world’s poorest nations.
Our collaborations with German partners include a Grand Challenges Partnership with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the African Academy of Sciences to support African scientists who are pursuing innovations in maternal, newborn, and child health.
Other recent investments include support for Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German development agency, in its efforts to strengthen health insurance programs in India and soil health programs in Ethiopia; and support for tuberculosis drug candidate development by the Hamburg-based biotech company Evotec.
From San Francisco, we support work with German grantees and partners, help sustain European donor support, and help foster political commitment in Europe to advance global health and development goals.
